What actually happens when you ask ChatGPT a question?

Your question is never treated as one question. What you type is only the surface. Under the hood, the system expands it into multiple smaller questions before generating anything.

Here is a practical example. Someone asks ChatGPT: "What is the best CRM for a CRO?" To a human, that sounds like a single question. To an AI system, it immediately branches.

  1. What kind of clinical research organisation is the user asking about? A mid-size CRO with 200 people faces different needs than a five-person boutique.
  2. What does "best" mean in this specific context? Best for pricing, for features, for sponsor relationship management, for regulatory compliance?
  3. What risks come with each option? What assumptions in the question might be unsafe to carry forward into the answer?

None of this branching is visible to the user. All of it shapes the final answer. The system is not answering the question you typed. It is answering the expanded version of your question.

Why do two people asking the same question still get different answers?

Fan-out explains this cleanly, and the explanation is simpler than most people expect.

Two people type "what is the best CRM" into ChatGPT. One is a startup founder running a five-person team. The other is a business development leader at a regulated clinical research organisation. Same words on the screen. Completely different internal expansions happening underneath.

The start-up founder's session context, prior questions, and phrasing lead the system to expand into sub-questions about ease of setup, pricing tiers, and integrations with lightweight tools. 

The CRO leader's context pushes the expansion toward compliance requirements, sponsor management, and multi-stakeholder workflows. Different fan-out branches produce different retrieved sources, which produce different answers.

The system is not confused. It is filling in different assumptions based on different contexts, and the fan-out branches diverge before the answer generation even begins.

What happens to content that only answers the surface question?

It becomes incomplete from the system's perspective, and incomplete content is risky for AI to reuse.

Most content is written to answer the question as a user would type it. "Best CRM for clinical research organisations" gets a page that lists five CRMs with feature comparisons. 

The surface question is covered. The sub-questions the system generated during fan-out, the ones about edge cases, trade-offs, pricing risks, compliance gaps, and organisational fit, are left unanswered.

When AI encounters a page that covers one branch of the fan-out but ignores the rest, it has two options. It can supplement the missing branches with other sources, which means your content gets partially used and another brand fills the gaps. 

It can also skip the page entirely because stitching together an answer from an incomplete source introduces too much risk. Either outcome means lost visibility, and neither outcome is caused by weak SEO.

Content that covers only the first row and ignores the rest does not survive fan-out.

Why does long-form content still matter in AI search?

Not because users read every word. Long-form content matters because fan-out queries require depth somewhere.

AI needs a source where assumptions are clearly stated, trade-offs are explained across different scenarios, and contradictions between options are resolved rather than glossed over. Short answers rarely accomplish all three. 

A 300-word page that answers "best CRM for CROs" with a ranked list gives the system one data point. A 1,500-word page that walks through when each option works, when it breaks, and what the buyer should watch out for gives the system multiple branches to pull from confidently.

Previously, the standard advice was to answer questions as quickly and concisely as possible. 

For featured snippets and AI overviews, brevity still helps. For surviving fan-out, brevity is a liability. The expanded sub-questions need room to be addressed, and that room only exists in content that goes deeper than the surface question.

How do you write content that survives fan-out?

Stop writing to answer one question. Start writing to cover the branches AI will naturally break that question into.

Before drafting any piece of content, ask three questions. What sub-questions will the system naturally generate from the main prompt? What would the system need explained to answer each branch safely? Where could misunderstanding or ambiguity in the answer create risk?

A practical tool worth trying is AlsoAsked. Type a keyword or query and it expands into the "People Also Ask" tree that Google generates, showing how one question branches into related questions layer by layer. 

The expansion pattern mirrors fan-out behaviour closely enough to serve as a useful planning input for how to structure content that covers more than one branch.

Every scenario covered is one less branch the system has to guess on. Every branch the system does not have to guess on is one less reason to skip your content or supplement it with a competitor's page. Writing for fan-out is not about word count. It is about branch coverage.

What is the real reason your content feels ignored by AI?

Stop asking why your page did not rank. Start asking which sub-questions you left unanswered.

AI does not reward pages that simply answer questions. AI prefers pages that support reasoning across the full scope of what the system expanded the question into. Fan-out is the mechanism behind that preference. 

Content that feels ignored is almost always content that covered the surface question well and left the branches underneath it completely unaddressed. The visibility was not lost at the ranking layer. It was lost at the expansion layer, before the answer was even assembled.

Search engineering treats fan-out as a core design input, not an afterthought. Every piece of content in a search engineering framework is structured around the branches a prompt will naturally expand into, ensuring the system has enough depth to use the source confidently rather than skipping it for something more complete.

Day 12 builds directly on this. Fan-out does not always expand the same way, and answers can change over time even when your content has not changed at all.
